Coastal Cities - Thinktank by Lions at the Door

One Man Team Dance – Set Menu One Man Team Dance are two guys (see what they did there) playing a drum kit and a small selection of synths and a toy guitar running through effects pedals. The result is an authentic musical journey which hints at different styles and dynamics and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with a limited range of instruments and sounds. The drummer, who has played for The Pscyche Out Musikland Big Band, is superb throughout, which helps given that this is effectively an instrumental album with very occasional shouts. I should probably be referencing alot of noise rock bands but to me the record evokes the synth sections in Rolo Tomassi and Horse the Band, and like those bands there are moments of emotional depth that emerge through the noise and catch you off guard. In particular What Would Webbs Do? carries a mournful weight that somehow makes an overdriven synth sound as expressive as a string instrument. Elsewhere I Can’t Believe We Nearly Bought This is catchy in the most abstract way imaginable, with a few shouted lyrics about an Armando Iannucci sketch and a great instrumental ‘chorus’ breaking up the dexterity-testing keyboard riffage of the song. Having appeared as a screamer for local hardcore bands in the past, Brad Rock is now working on a hip hop project under the name xELMCx. This came as a massive surprise to me but the songs are well-produced and the lyrics are brilliantly honest. Look out for a physical release sometime in May.

This week I spent two days filming Charlie Costello and his Clockwork Club cronies in a studio in Chesham as they laid down two new tracks. Max and Richard from Ghost of the Gully came down to lend drums, bass and keys to Charlie’s songs, so they sound bigger than anything he’s previously produced, and the songs themselves are incredible. I think everyone involved felt like they were part of something pretty special.
